Mes conseils pour commencer à lire en anglais (VO)

Bonjour mes petits lecteurs avides de dépaysement,

J’ai reçu de très nombreuses demandes de votre part sur YouTube mais aussi Instagram pour que je vous conseille des livres afin que vous puissiez commencer à lire en VO (comprenez en anglais, je ne saurais pas vous donner de conseils dans d’autres langues).

J’ai donc décidé d’en faire une vidéo, et j’espère qu’elle répondra à toutes vos interrogations et saura vous inspirer pour vous lancer !

Les points essentiels pour bien commencer à lire en anglais

Lire du contemporain

C’est ce qu’il y a de plus simple au niveau du vocabulaire.

Lire des livres jeunesse ou Young Adult

Le vocabulaire y est par définition plus simple et plus adapté pour un public plus jeune (même si ces livres restent agréables à lire pour les adultes également).

Lire des recueils de nouvelles

Le texte est moins long. Il y a donc des chances pour qu’il y ait moins de descriptions et que la lecture soit plus fluide et rapide.

Lire des romans graphiques

Les graphic novels (comprenez les BD, mangas, etc.) sont également un bon moyen pour débuter la lecture en anglais puisqu’ils sont illustrés et comportent moins de texte.

Relire des romans déjà lus en français

Vous connaissez déjà le contexte global du livre, vous serez donc moins perdu durant votre lecture.

Romans jeunesse

Et comme pour toutes les règles, il y a des exceptions : voici quelques ouvrages dans d’autres tranches d’âge ou genres littéraires que vous pouvez tout à fait tenter de lire car ils sont assez abordables en terme de vocabulaire.

Quelques romans d’imaginaire jeunesse/Young Adult

Quelques romances adulte

Les romans de Colleen Hoover

Colleen Hoover est la reine incontestée de la romance New Adult aux États-Unis.

On ne compte plus ses best-sellers : It Ends With Us, Maybe Someday, Confess, November 9…

Elle s’est également illustrée dans d’autres genres tels que le Young Adult (Without Merit, Hopeless…) ou la dark romance (Too Late).

Son écriture est fluide et très agréable, tout en nous offrant des romans poignants et magnifiques : je vous la recommande chaudement !

De la romance paranormale adulte

Darynda Jones, First Grave On The Right (Charley Davidson #1), St Martin’s Press, 2011

Charley sees dead people.

That’s right, she sees dead people.

And it’s her job to convince them to « go into the light. »

But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (i.e., murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice.

Complicating matters are the intensely hot dreams she’s been having about an Entity who has been following her all her life… and it turns out he might not be dead after all.

Les genres à éviter si on débute la lecture en anglais

La science-fiction

Les romans de science-fiction comportent généralement beaucoup de termes techniques qui risquent de compliquer votre compréhension de l’histoire.

La Fantasy

Dans l’optique de développer un monde imaginaire, l’auteur.e doit également créer tout un vocabulaire en rapport avec le cadre qu’il/elle construit. Ces mots risquent de vous laisser perplexes si vous vous concentrez déjà sur la compréhension du vocabulaire courant.

La poésie/le théâtre

Dans l’optique de jouer avec les mots et les rimes, les auteur.e.s de poésie et de théâtre utilisent très souvent un vocabulaire très recherché. Pas forcément le plus aisé pour débuter à lire en anglais !

Les classiques

Même si ce sont des incontournables, les classiques de la littérature anglaise ont souvent été écrits il y a quelques siècles de cela… le vocabulaire employé n’était donc pas encore l’anglais que nous connaissons aujourd’hui, et les tournures de phrases peuvent être particulièrement complexes si vous débutez (ou même pour un lecteur averti).

Vous imaginez donner du Victor Hugo à un Anglais qui déciderait de commencer à lire en français ?

Les avantages de la liseuse

Même si on préfère lire sur du bon vieux papier, la liseuse comporte quelques avantages non-négligeables pour la lecture en anglais.

Un dictionnaire intégré

Généralement, toutes les liseuses embarquent également un dictionnaire Français et Anglais-Français.

Cela a l’avantage de vous permettre de surligner un mot que vous ne comprendriez pas et d’obtenir sa traduction de façon très rapide (plus que devoir aller ouvrir un dictionnaire puis de reprendre votre lecture).

Des extraits gratuits

Les liseuses sont également pour la plupart reliées à une boutique en ligne (Fnac.com/Rakuten pour la Kobo ou Amazon pour Kindle…).

En naviguant sur la boutique, vous pouvez télécharger un extrait gratuit du livre qui vous intéresse et commencer votre lecture directement sur votre liseuse.

Ça vous permet de tester par vous même le degré de difficulté du texte et de pouvoir mieux décider si vous allez vous lancer, avant d’acheter le livre en question.
